A waste management company and two individuals have been fined a total £100,000 for illegally dumping controlled waste.
Manns Waste Management Limited, Glenn Tamplin and Ricky Mann all pleaded guilty to their roles in operating an illegal waste facility in Essex.
The director of the company, Ricky Mann was found to have acted negligently after his company illegally deposited waste in the grounds of Glenn Tamplin’s home in Abridge, Essex in 2014.
According to the Environment Agency, the premises did not have an environmental permit or an exemption for the waste to be deposited, and had no infrastructure in place to protect the environment from pollution.
Around 6,000 tonnes of waste was deposited across an area roughly the size of a football pitch. This caused the land to be raised by around two metres. Household and commercial waste was found at various locations and some of this had begun to degrade causing odour and discolouration of the soil from leaching.
Ricky Mann was fined a total of £8,000 and ordered to pay £18,500 towards the costs of the investigation and prosecution for breaching the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. The judge said, if the fine was not paid within nine months Ricky Mann would go to prison for two months.
Glen Tamplin was fined a total of £45,000 with £30,800 in costs for breaching the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, and will have to serve a nine-month prison term if he does not pay the fine within three months.
Manns Waste Management Limited was found guilty of breaching the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. The company was fined a total of £50,000 with £18,600 costs.
